The Fine Arts Department of Thailand has officially announced the registration of 79 historical sites across Thailand, including Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Prasat Ta Kwai, both close to the border with Cambodia

The Fine Arts Department issued 11 official announcements covering historical sites located in various provinces, especially along Thailand’s border areas. The purpose is to officially recognize these sites as part of Thailand’s cultural heritage and to ensure they are protected under Thai law.

Caring For Our History and Culture

Many visitors to Thailand don’t realise how much history lies in every province of the country, and is vulnerable to all kinds of problems, such as degradation, weathering, vandalism, etc., and how hard it is to ensure it’s preserved for future generations. Thai history didn’t start with Sukhothai or Ayuddhya, it goes back millions of years.

The Royal Gazette published the Fine Arts Department announcements, which took effect on 9 May 2026. The registration covers historical sites in Northern Thailand, Northeastern Thailand, and Southern Thailand.

The registered sites include:

• Nakhon Phanom – 40 sites, including Phra That Nakhon and Wat Okat Si Bua Ban.

• Ubon Ratchathani – 4 sites, including Hat Sai Sung, Red Palm Cave, Red Bull Cave, and Pha Taem.

• Mukdahan – 10 sites, including Wat Yot Kaew Si Wichai, Wat Si Bun Rueang, archaeological sites, ancient Buddha images, and traditional ordination halls.

• Tak – 2 sites, including Phra That Doi Din Chi and Doi Phra That archaeological mound.

• Yala – 2 sites, including Piyamit Tunnel and Ban Ka Pae Kota City Wall.

• Narathiwat – 1 site, To Mo Mine.

• Ranong – 1 site, Khao Chedi (Replica of Shwedagon Pagoda).

• Buriram – 6 sites, including Prasat Bai Baek, Prasat Thong, and Prasat Lam Chang Han.

• Amnat Charoen – 1 site, Wat Si Bun Rueang Ordination Hall.

• Sisaket – 3 sites, including Twin Stupas and ancient rock paintings.
