Water Cave Temple

Water Cave Temple

Hello again my Fellow explorers! This intriguing underground temple, known in Thai as Wat Tham Nam, was yet another ‘found by accident’ place while we were driving around a rural area of Ratchaburi.

The winding forest road that took us there was teeming with monkeys, but thankfully and oddly they did not seem to cross the temple boundary. However, be very careful as they are quite aggressive, so don’t carry food, phones, or bags (they’re very likely to steal them) unless you’re locked inside a moving car, and don’t stop for them.

Discover the Magic

If you’re like me and love exploring the hidden gems of this beautiful country, you absolutely have to hear about this special place in Ratchaburi called Wat Tham Nam, or, the Water Cave Temple.

I love finding places that are quiet, mysterious, and full of character – and this temple fits the bill absolutely perfectly!

What’s So Special?

The Water Cave Temple is a royal Buddhist temple that feels like stepping into another world. But here’s the twist: the entire temple is built inside a massive natural limestone cave. You might wonder, “Why build a temple inside a dark cave?” Well, it turns out the cave was chosen for very special spiritual reasons.

Back in the early-to-mid 20th century, monks discovered this natural cavern and felt an immediate connection to its energy. They placed a revered Buddha image, known as Phra Buddha Chinnarat, inside. Even more fascinating is a natural stalactite hanging from the ceiling called “Bua Kli” (which means “Lotus Bud”). Locals believe this rock formation is sacred.

The cool air, the protection from the sun, and the constant flow of clear water running through the cave made it the perfect spot for meditation and prayer. The water isn’t just for looks; it’s used for ritual purification, adding a layer of spiritual cleansing to the experience. Over time, what started as a small shrine grew into the beautiful temple complex we see today.

What To Expect Inside:

Walking into Wat Tham Nam is like entering a magical grotto. Here’s what you’ll see:

Flowing Water: A gentle stream of water runs right through the cave, creating a soothing sound that helps calm the mind.

Colorful Lights: To highlight the natural beauty of the rock formations, the temple has installed soft, multicolored lights. They make the stalactites and stalagmites glow in a way that feels almost dreamlike.

Sacred Statues: You’ll find numerous statues of Buddha and mythical Naga serpents nestled among the rocks. There are also some colorful decorative figurines that add a touch of local charm.

Nooks and Crannies: There’s a maze of levels and side chambers which shouldn’t be missed, but you won’t get lost as it’s easy to find your way around.

A Single Monk: The temple is tended by just one monk, giving it a very intimate and peaceful atmosphere.
